Here is the secret project I've been working on for the past few months. I scanned the old comic I wrote in middle school (It was over 200 pages!) and published it through Lulu! It was mostly just a present for my childhood friends who liked reading it back then, but I had a lot of fun getting to draw the characters again for the cover. Dear Blog,

I promise I did not forget about you. Life, as it sometimes likes to do, got somewhat crazy. I just moved, which has been fantastic, but also did not leave too much time for drawing stuff! Now that things are starting to settle back into somewhat of a routine, hopefully I'll be able to get back into some good drawing habits too!

Alli and I did some drawing at Animal Kingdom! We used to go drawing at the zoo all the time, and it was great getting a chance to do that again with her. Later, Dan and I figured out we could weasel into the Animal Kingdom Lodge resort without anyone kicking us out, so we drew some animals there too. It's been a fun, creative, zooy couple of days!

Dan and I keep pretending we're going to start a band. Some possible band names have included "Scurvy Quest" and "The Gimbal Locks" We even have the names for our first few hit singles: "Smiling Death Potion" "Fedora Days" and "All My Exes are T-Rexes". Now all we need is the ability to write songs and play instruments! Darn it. This was really fun to paint... hopefully I'll be doing more of these too!

Sorry for disappearing for so long. It's been a crazy couple of months! After a lot of thought and deliberation, I decided to leave school. I had always planned to move out to San Fransisco to finish my classes on campus, but as the time to move started getting closer, I realized I really didn't want to leave Florida. Perhaps more importantly, I realized that I don't think I want to work in animation after all. I love cartoons, and still want to make them, but I think it might be more fun to just work independently and self-publish instead of being a cog in a machine somewhere. I'll probably be poor forever, but here goes nothing!

On the day I decided to leave school for sure, my car's brakes gave way at a red light. Luckily I was fine, but I was carless for a few weeks. Dan was awesome and toted me around all over the place, and even went car shopping with me. Now, finally, it seems like life is starting to calm down again. (Which leaves way more time for drawing!)

For better or worse I'll be posting a comic here every week. Watch out!

My amazing boyfriend got me a new tablet for my birthday. My old one lost it's pressure sensitivity years ago. Now I can actually ink stuff in photoshop! It's a lot easier (at least for me) to get into a drawing when you can work on it from start to finish in one go. The whole inking then stopping and scanning thing steals a lot of my drawing mojo... but now that won't be a problem anymore! I'm so excited!

This was just practice. Yes... the hands are all wonky, but I don't care! This was so fun.

(This guy reminded me so much of Cosgrove from Freakazoid. I just wanted to give him a can of hash and some coffee.)

I thought I should start taking pictures of my caricatures at work for a few reasons.

1) I've been too busy to draw much else, unfortunately.

2) Maybe having a photo record of some of the stuff I've been doing in the park will give me a reason to try to make my sketches better.

Looking at these I can already see that I have a tendency to give people crazy powerful chins, whether they really have one or not. Also, even though the likeness is okay on some of these, I'm getting the basic shape of the face wrong a lot of the time. I also make kids look too old. My self-imposed homework for the rest of the week at work is going to be trying to simplify and bring out the basic shapes in people's faces.

Here goes nothing!

(P.S. any critiques would be appreciated too!)

(P.P.S. Although I didn't take a picture, I also drew a guy that looked exactly like the TV character from "The Brave Little Toaster" (Look at about .58 seconds)

It's great when people already look like cartoon characters before you sit down to draw them. )

I was having one of those days where I kept coming up with tons of ideas for projects I should start, but not enough focus to make much happen. Luckily once I made myself work on this card for my dad I ended up getting a lot done!

I'm debating doing the text by computer too so it would be more legible, but I'm not sure. Handwriting feels a lot more personal.

It was fun playing around with color again, but I have so much trouble keeping things simple!
It's easy to get too caught up looking at reference and painting the way things look instead of just focusing on how they feel. ...Something to work on next time :)

One of the best things about going home after a little while away is rediscovering all the old stuff you almost forgot about. Here are some pages from the "diary" I kept in kindergarten. It's weird... in some ways I feel like I still draw exactly like this.
